A treat for Mothers' Day - Sunday May 10th

Calling all Kings Landing moms, or sons or daughters of moms (ok that's everyone, right?).

A really great experience for moms and daughters ( and their husbands and dads) to share on Mothers' Day is the performance of My Mother's Story- to be held this year at the Granville Island Main Stage from 4 to 6 pm. Twenty actors tell the story of their mother's life in a fast paced 90 minute show. There are happy episodes, tragic events, and you will laugh and maybe shed a tear or two.

Check out my full write up at My Mother's Story 2009. Tickets are $23.00 for reserved seats. Details on the above link or at reviewfromthehouse.com

I saw it two years ago and loved it then as you can read in My Mother's Story: A Mother's Perspective. Go and see it and let me know what you think about it.

Fun and a good cause- May 2nd party

Here is a message from Brad Marchant, and his band Backbeat:

The next fundraiser my band is doing is on May 2, 8pm at the Rowing Club in Stanley Park. We do 2 of these every year and they have always been a good party. Two bands, 350 people and lots of dancing to rock and roll classics.

There are only 30 tickets left.

The pictures show BackBeat in action. Also with us on May 2nd is Fabulous George and the Zodiacs – a great dance band from Winnipeg.

The charity is the Kelty Dennehy Foundation – who are active in teenage issues in Vancouver.

Hope to see you there. If anyone wants tickets I can be reached at bmarchant@bioteq.ca, 604 ... or at the Canucks games in the theatre !!!

Hope to see you there

Note from Gill:

I went to their party at the rowing club last year and had a blast.

Hot Lucy is Back at The Yale

Hot Lucy plays at the Yale Hotel on Tuesday April 28th, approximate time 8:00 PM 40 minute set.

Terry reports also that:

"Hot Lucy has been asked to be the special guest on May 2nd at the Saturday afternoon jam. This will consist of 4 songs. We will have a special guest playing with us on piano and Hammond organ. A childhood friend of mine that I played in bands with from age 12 to 18.

Hope you can attend one or both. The Yale hotel is watching us to see how many people come to hear us. They are looking at booking us for a 3 set evening in the upcoming months. Your support is greatly appreciated. Hope to see you all there."

Grand Opening of the Guest Suites

Our guest rooms are beautifully and tastefully refurbished, thanks to the diligent efforts of our hardworking president, Deb, (seen holding flowers thoughtfully brought by Michael), and her able assistants, Farnoosh and Jan

We owe a special debt of gratitude to Glen from Sleep Country for the three queen size beds and for help with the attractive bed linens. Thanks to his assistance we came in nicely within the budget.

Deb and the council hosted an open house and many of you came to see the great improvements in these rooms. Congratulations to all for a really impressive job.

Gillian recommends the "20 Chefs, 20 Nights, 20 Homes" 2009

For our King's Landing "foodies" and wino's - oops I mean oenophiles.

I recently learned about the series of events running through April and May as a fundraiser for the Arts Club. It is called "20 Chefs, 20 Nights, 20 Homes" and basically is a three hour participatory cooking lesson with dinner (you eat what you cook) and wine.

I attended the first one on this last Thursday with Tony Minichiello of the Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver as the chef instructor.

It was great fun- good food, nice wine and interesting people. You can read about it on ReviewFromThehouse.com in my notes from Gillian's kitchen.

In my article there is a link to the Arts Club site which gives more information about the upcoming Celebrity Chef evening. A few are sold out but I understand that there are still spaces in most of them. If you want to know more give me a call

Line Up for The King's Landing Down Under Film Festival

This is the information from Marilyn G. re "The KL Down-Under Film Fest":

Here's the line-up for the remaining films in the King's Landing Down Under Film Festival. All are in the KL Theatre 1-3 pm except where noted.

Tuesday, April 7: Whale Rider - Farnoosh is hosting. Paikea Apirana is the only living child in the line of a Maori tribe's chiefly succession. By tradition, the leader should be the first-born son — a direct descendant of Palkea the Whale Rider — he who rode atop a whale. However, Pai is female and technically cannot inherit the leadership. The movie is a beautiful story of her struggles to show that she is worthy of being chief.

Sunday, April 12, 1-4 pm: Thorn Birds, part 1 - Farnoosh is hosting.

Wednesday, April 15, 7:30 pm: Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - View Club selection (possible date change due to hockey playoffs)

Saturday, April 18, 1-4 pm: Thorn Birds, part 2 - Farnoosh is hosting.

Sunday, April 19, 1-4 pm: Thorn Birds - The Missing Years - Farnoosh is hosting. . It is a 1996 "midquel" to the original 1983 miniseries, the story of the 19 years that are unaccounted for between the birth of Dane, and Ralph's return to Australia in the original ABC miniseries.

Tuesday, April 21: Once Were Warriors - Susan Man hosting. This gritty movie tells the story of a dysfunctional Maori family and their problems with alcohol, poverty and domestic violence, a important insight into a disenfranchised people digging down deep to find their pride. A difficult film to watch but very well reviewed.

Saturday, April 25, 1-4 pm, Screening Room: Town like Alice, part 1 - Marilyn is hosting. Heroine is an attractive young English captive in a Japanese POW camp and hero a cheerful Australian POW tortured for a simple act of kindness. Separated first by their captors then by the distance of passing years, the two are finally reunited in the rugged outback of Australia - to face a challenge every bit as demanding as their wartime trials. 1981 PBS mini series

Sunday, April 26, 1-4 pm, Screening Room: Town like Alice, part 2.

Tuesday, April 28: Walkabout - Tricia is hosting. Two young children are stranded in the Australian outback and are forced to cope on their own. They meet an Aborigine on "walkabout": a ritualistic banishment from his tribe. 1971 classic film.

Wednesday, April 29, 7:30 pm: Picnic at Hanging Rock - View Club selection (possible date change due to hockey playoffs)
