DWTS Kick-off (?Dance Off) in the Theatre

On Monday we launched the new season of KL Dancing with the Stars nights. Fortified with wine, champagne and some healthy snacks, we enjoyed the introductory dances. This week two of the initial contestants were eliminated so there are 11 left .

This week we meet at 7:15 in the Theatre on Tuesday night. I will bring a ballot form so that everyone can predict their choice of the eventual winner. These predictions will be sealed and kept unopened until the finale. Hopefully I can get the right night this time!

So if you missed our opening night, remember Tuesday 30th 7:15 in the KL Theatre. See you there

KL September Birthday Bash

On Saturday the Grand Room reverberated to the sound of about 40 enthusiastic if perhaps not operatic quality voices belting out Happy Birthday to nine KLers who had September birthdays. The unusual ratio gave rise to some speculation. The sociologists among us pointed out that September came 9 months after Christmas and New Year. Hmmmmm. The statisticians calculated that among about 120 households you would expect 10 to have a September birthday. The sceptics pointed out that since the birthday celebrants were specifically invited and should be excluded from the calculation, leaving only one attendee whose September birthday was not before known, there were actually less than the 3 that would be expected. At that comment the discussants were observed to turn their focus to rapidly emptying their wine glasses.

As usual the tables were covered with an unusual variety of food which disappeared rapidly. It's really hard to become svelte in this place. And as usual a minor miracle was performed when it was time to clean up. With super efficiency plates were cleared, glasses washed and the room returned to a pristine state in no time. I wish I could tidy my apartment as quickly.

As the sparklers on the huge birthday cake fizzled out and huge slices of cake were being distributed one keen celebrant suggested we similarly celebrate the October birthdays next month. A party weary cynic pointed out that there were 12 months and statistically we would have about nine or ten birthday people every month. On that note more wine glasses were rapidy drained.

Dance with the Stars in the KL Theatre

At our "Oops we missed the DWTS Finale" night in May, I promised that I would organize the DWTS Viewers' Night so folks could get involved from the beginning. Since I can't actually find a schedule yet (other than for the premiere on Monday September 22nd) and needing to co-ordinate the Dance nights with the Hockey schedule, I have tentatively made the following bookings for the theatre.
Please mark them in your diaries though I will send out a e-minder to those who plan to attend. Bear in mind that this might change according to the network schedule and other unforeseen circumstances.

The present bookings are: Monday nights:
September 22 - 8 to 10 (the premiere- and I will describe the planned watching format)
Oct0ber 27 - 8 pm
November 3rd - 8 pm

Tuesday nights:
Starting at 6:30 or 7 - not sure yet
September 30
October 7, 14,
October 21 (starting at 7:30 - after hockey)

KL Gals and the Arts

Last week a few of us spontaneously went to see a little gem of a musical at Pacific Theatre at 12th Ave. just off Granville. Based on compiled work of Kander and Ebb, it is called The World Goes 'Round.

One of the 5 talented young actors/singers/dancers turned out to be the niece of one of our residents. The picture (courtesy Jessie van Rijn) shows Jennifer Neumann in a dramatic rendition of All That Jazz from the musical, Chicago.

See my review at http://theaterseenvancouver.blogspot.com/2008/08/review-from-house-world-goes-round.html or click the link on the right of this page.

And then, a couple of night's later I was watching the movie, Elegy, when a familiar face breifly flashed on the screen. Auntie Sue, was that you? Since the movie was shot in Vancouver I think I was not mistaken. So we can see where niece comes by her acting talent. Or is it the other way around?

We thoroughly enjoyed the evening - and agreed that we would look out for further theatrical treats. If you want to be added to the nortification list for future theatre outings, email me.
